In India, one can become a coastal pilot by meeting certain eligibility requirements and obtaining the necessary license from the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). The DGS has set up an exam for the Coastal Pilot License (CPL) for this purpose.

Coastal pilot jobs in India require that candidates be at least 18 years old, holding a master's degree in marine engineering or navigation from an institute recognized by the Indian Maritime University with at least three years of experience as an officer on board a merchant vessel.

Coastal pilots are licensed mariners who guide vessels through shallow coastal waters. They are responsible for advising captains on the safest routes and anchorages, as well as assisting with navigation and docking.

The eligibility criteria to become a Coastal Pilot in India is a graduate degree in marine engineering or a 3-year diploma course in Marine Engineering from an approved institute.
